William Savin
Age 83. William (Bill) Savin was born in Newark, New Jersey on May 29th, 1938 and passed away at home with his wife of 60 years, and son on January 13, 2022.
Bill graduated from Newark College of Engineering with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1968 he earned a PhD in Nuclear Physics from Rutgers University.
Bill attained the position of Professor of Physics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and served on numerous college committees. He also was on loan to the National Science Foundation for two years where he evaluated grants helping to determine which were worthy of funding.
During his tenure at NJIT, Bill became very involved in the Upward Bound Math and Science program from 1991 until he retired in 2002. The program serves high school students from low income families and families where neither parent has a college degree. He derived much pleasure and satisfaction seeing these students succeed and go on to colleges all over this country.
During his tenure at NJIT Bill also co-authored a Schaum's Outline on Modern Physics.
Bill is survived by his wife Janet Handler, two sons and spouses, Howard V. Savin (Helen), and Paul E. Savin (Helena) and four grandchildren (Joshua, Max, Alexandra(Alex) and Lucas). He is also survived by a sister, Linda Schram and numerous nieces and nephews.
